My Unforgettable Journey in Marrakech | Article

Gardens of Marrakech with Kirsty Fergusson | by Faye Anderson

I have just returned from our wonderful Boxwood tour, Gardens of Marrakech, led by the talented Kirsty Fergusson. This was not only my first Boxwood tour but also my very first garden tour and my inaugural visit to Morocco! I was excited to experience this vibrant culture and the stunning landscapes.

The itinerary was thoughtfully designed, with each day centred around a unique theme that highlighted the incredible variety of gardens in Marrakech. We enjoyed access to some truly remarkable sites, from the enchanting Villa

Oasis—once the home of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, in the French quarter, to private tours nestled in the breathtaking Atlas Mountains. There was truly something for everyone.

A standout moment for me was on day four, themed around contemporary garden design. We had the privilege of being guided through the stunning Villa Nouria by its owner, Helena Oswald. Her garden, designed by the talented Helene Lindgens, was nothing short of spectacular. Later that afternoon, we ventured into the Atlas Mountains to visit Olinto, where we were warmly welcomed by occupier Jose, who shared the beauty of their grounds in that stunning setting.

Our culinary experiences throughout the tour were equally memorable. We dined at the exquisite La Mamounia restaurant and enjoyed lunch at the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and many more. A particularly special evening was spent at Jnane Tamsna, hosted by Dr. Gary Martin and his wife Meryanne. Their daughter Thais introduced us to their beautiful property and gardens, and we were captivated by their charity work with the Global Diversity Foundation—a truly inspiring visit.

Our stay at the five-star La Maison Arabe, right in the heart of Marrakech, added to the magic of the tour. The attentive staff, impeccable service, and beautifully prepared meals were the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

Lastly, I must express my gratitude to Kirsty Fergusson, our garden expert. Her deep knowledge and passion for gardening enriched each visit, making the experience all the more engaging. Thank you, Kirsty, for your invaluable insights!

I also want to thank my fellow participants. We formed a wonderful group that made this tour enjoyable and created memories I will never forget.

I’m already looking forward to my next visit to Marrakech and my next Boxwood adventure!
